Google Business Profile vs. a Website: Which One Books More Jobs?
August 7, 2026 · 6 min read
"I get all my work from Google Maps — why do I need a website?" Fair question. Here's the honest answer, including the part where the map listing really is doing the heavy lifting.
What your Google Business Profile does well
The map pack is where local intent lives. For "plumber near me," the three map results get a huge share of the clicks, and your GBP — reviews, photos, hours, service area — is what gets you into that pack. If you do nothing else, claim it, fill in every field, and get reviews relentlessly. It's free and it matters.
Where the listing quietly fails you
- You don't control ranking. The pack reshuffles constantly, competitors' review velocity changes it, and one policy hiccup can suspend your listing overnight. Companies that live on GBP alone are one suspension away from zero leads.
- It can't sell. A homeowner comparing three listings sees the same layout for all of you: stars, photos, hours. Your 20 years of experience, your guarantee, your financing — none of it fits in a listing.
- Half the clicks go to your website anyway. "Visit website" is one of the most-clicked actions on a profile. If it leads to a dated template — or nowhere — the credibility you built with reviews evaporates on arrival.
- No listing captures leads at night. After-hours callers hit your voicemail. A site with built-in capture books them.
How they actually work together
Google explicitly uses your website's content as a ranking signal for the map pack itself. Service pages and service-area pages on your site strengthen the listing's relevance. That's the loop: the profile gets you seen → the website gets you chosen → the website's SEO pushes the profile higher. Companies with both, aligned, compound. Companies with only one leak jobs to whoever has both.
The practical setup for a service company
- GBP fully filled out, category-precise, with a steady review cadence.
- A fast website with a page per service and per city you work.
- The site linked from the profile, with matching name, phone, and service areas.
- 24/7 capture on the site so profile clicks at night still become jobs.
We build the website half of that loop for a flat rate — here's exactly what's included, and here are live examples.
